Technology

Offshore wind turbines are based on the same technology as their onshore counterparts and the expected lifespan is the same, approximately 20 years. The main difference is the size. A typical onshore turbines being installed today has a height to tip off between 100 m & 120m

It is possible to build the structures in deep water, most notably the North Sea oil platforms, but is expensive and would not be economically viable for offshore wind given the current state of development of the technology.

There are no technical barriers to installing wind turbines offshore, but the construction, delivered to site and assembly of such large machines requires specialist equipment, facilities at Port and careful timetabling to make use of calm weather.

The Energy Park, Newcastle provides a simple and complete solution to the needs of the offshore renewables industry.

  Supply Chain

An existing regional renewables supply chain is well co-ordinated and supported. Supporting technologies offer a total supply base solution and a seamless local supply chain, with welldeveloped manufacturing facilities, established industrial infrastructure and good communication networks.

The Northeast has a long history and well-established capacity in the manufacturing industry and provides ready access to world-class capabilities in the Marine offshore, oil and gas and power generation sectors, coupled with its strong skills base and competitive labour costs, which makes the Northeast and natural target for investment.
