The industrial and research skills base is strong in the north east and is augmented by a large number of technical graduates from universities in the region. The unemployment rate amongst the industrial workforce is also relatively high, meaning that skilled workers are readily available to support rapid growth in the offshore wind industry.

Available skills:

Of the one million people employed in the region, some 16%, or 159,000, are directly employed in manufacturing industries:

Data on unemployment rates can be contradictory, but recently it has been reported that unemployment is at 6.5% in the north east as a whole, around 74,000 workers, a large proportion of which (almost 18,000) are science and engineering professionals or skilled workers in construction, engineering and other trades.

Technical skills are partly fed by higher education institutions in the region - circa 80,000 graduates a year, of which 30% are technical or related subjects.

Data suggests that the north east has an immediate skills availability. It also has a lower cost of employment than other European counterparts - an important factor when considering investment into new manufacturing. An average wage in the north east could be as much as 30% - 40% more in Germany and Denmark respectively.
