The north east has a substantial advantage in aiding the worldwide growth of offshore wind power:

The Renewable Energy Park, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne is based on a vast area of the riverside, spanning over 150 acres of this north easterly port, with ready access to windfarm sites along the east coast of England and the North Sea. The coasts of other European countries with offshore wind development plans are also within easy reach.

The Tyne Port is a deep river port, with round-the-clock access, 2.5 miles from the mouth of the river Tyne. Based in Tyne Dock near Newcastle upon Tyne, with an International Passenger Terminal within easy reach of Newcastle International Airport, the port offers easy access to the UK national motorway network while within Tyne Dock, the port operates a rail terminal linking directly to the UK’s high speed east coast main line.

The Northeast has a long history and well-established capacity in the manufacturing industry, in companies such as Nissan, Wellstream, Duco, Siemens , CE Electric , PB Power , Alcan , P&G , Romag , Econnect , The Engineering Business , Eaga , SMD for example, and provides ready access to world-class capabilities in the Marine offshore, oil and gas and power generation sectors. This, coupled with its strong skills base and competitive labor costs, makes the Northeast a natural target for investment.

The renewable energy sector in the north east is also supported by economic development initiatives, to enhance the research technology and skills base.

The potential role of the north east in this sector is further strengthened by a variety of publicly supported initiatives, including: The New and Renewable Energy Center (NaREC), NOF (formerly the Northern Offshore Federation) and economic organisations such as ONE (one northeast) and the Tees Valley Development Company.
